"Cuddles and Clyde"
by Deborah Walsh

Clyde was so terrified of people after being abandoned by his owner, that he endured starvation and agonizing pain from a badly mangled eye rather than trust a human to rescue him. The frightened little pekinese managed to elude capture for two months until he was near death, too weak to run and hide in the woods anymore.
It's unknown when Clyde's cruel ordeal began, but he was not alone. He and another Pekinese, a female, were spotted together on a country road in Jefferson before July 4. Both were very thin, and the female, later named Cuddles, was lying in the road, unable to stand up because she was so sick, according to Mila Rizzo, director of the Lancaster Humane Society. Because of her condition, Cuddles was easy to capture. Clyde refused to let anyone get near him. Growling, he ran off into the woods which became his new home for the next two months.
Cuddles needed emergency veterinarian care because she was bleeding to death and maggots were devouring her internally, Rizzo says. In serious condition, she was rushed to Companion Pet Care. Thanks to the excellent care she received, she was able to be released several days later to the Lancaster Shelter, according to Rizzo. The year-old dog was still weak collapsing occasionally in her water bowl and needed continuous care. But Cuddles was a fighter, and slowly began to recover after a diet of yogurt and honey and chicken soup. Shelter personnel marveled at her spry and affectionate personality. Nearly two months after her ordeal, the little dog was adopted by a couple from the St. Johnsbury, Vermont area.
In the meantime, Rizzo received a call reporting a Pekinese with a crushed, dislocated eye staggering around a road in Jefferson. With Rizzo's help, Clyde was finally captured with a humane trap. The dog was rushed to emergency surgery to remove his left eye. Clyde has since fully recovered, is regaining his trust in humans and now awaits adoption.
